A practical, hands-on introduction to working behind a bar.
I've been bartending for over four decades and the question I'm asked more than any other is:
“How do I get the experience to work in a bar when I don't have any experience?”
Bartender Basics is where you start.
This isn't a classroom course or a simulated bar. You'll be behind the bar at Lot Twenty, working with real equipment, real ingredients and making the drinks yourself.
Over three hours we'll cover the practical foundations you need behind a bar, including:
- Setting up and working efficiently
-Using bar equipment properly
- Pouring, measuring, shaking, stirring and building drinks
- Understanding the basic structure and balance of drinks
- Making and tasting a selection of drinks yourself
- Practical tips on how a real bar operates
You'll make the drinks yourself, taste what you're making and learn why we do things the way we do them.

Lot Twenty, Perth Cultural Centre
Classes are deliberately kept small and practical.
Lot Twenty is open while we train, so you're learning behind the bar in a genuine hospitality environment rather than a training room.
Bartender Basics is designed for:
- People who want to get their first job behind a bar
- Travellers looking for hospitality work in Australia
- People already working in hospitality who want practical bar skills
- Anyone who wants to learn how to make drinks properly
You don't need any previous bartending experience.
